An explosion and fire at a chemical plant in Brunswick, GA on Monday morning forced the evacuations of residents within a one-mile radius.
Early reports indicated a firefighter was injured. However, no additional information was available, 11Alive reported.
Gynn County officials said the fire occurred at the Symrise production site on Colonel Island.
"The production facility manufactures fragrance ingredients...Local fire brigades and police fully control the situation on site. The fire broke out during the early morning hours. The reason still needs to be investigated..." the statement read.
Gov. Brian Kemp also is keeping an eye on the situation, according to a published report.
“Earlier today, local authorities alerted my office of a major fire at the Symrise chemical plant off of Highway 17 in Brunswick. I immediately instructed Director Stallings of the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, Colonel Wright of the Georgia State Patrol, Director Rick Dunn of the Environmental Protection Division, and Georgia Department of Transportation leaders to direct all available state resources to assist local responders.
